Veggielution Provides Foster Youth with Access to Nature

Event: A Day at Veggielution

Date: August 17, 2024

Location: Veggielution, San Jose, CA

Population Served: Foster youth ages 3+

Event Highlights:

On Saturday, August 17, Veggielution hosted Child Advocates of Silicon Valley for an exciting day of garden exploration! Through this event, our foster youth and their CASA Volunteers were able to connect with nature, engage in arts and crafts, learn about animals and plants, and taste a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits straight from the garden.

Upon arrival, attendees were welcomed into the beautiful garden and introduced to a variety of engaging activity stations. Foster youth had the chance to paint flowers and landscapes using mud paint, build their own succulent pots and decorate them with their own personal touch using markers. After creating their artwork and assembling their succulents, our youth moved on to the worm station, where they observed worms up close and learned about nature’s helpers.

To wrap up the day, attendees helped water the garden plants and enjoyed picking fresh vegetables and fruits to taste. Our youth and their CASAs tasted the flavors of freshly grown tomatoes, peaches, basil and more!

The purpose of this event was to support foster youth by immersing them in nature, engaging them in mindfulness activities and fostering supportive relationships with their peers and CASA Volunteers. Through hands-on activities and the support of our CASA Volunteers, our youth were able to create positive, fun memories.

Our day at Veggielution was made possible thanks to the dedication of our community partner, Veggielution, along with their staff and volunteers. Through these collaborative efforts, we can continue to offer our foster youth enriching and positive experiences.

“Alex* loved the day at Veggielution, especially digging through the compost bin. He was fascinated to look at worms and other critters using the magnifying lens. He also enjoyed the cucumber samples and watering the strawberries with the watering can.” -CASA Volunteer
